Beginning on June 10, 2024, the speed limit on Indian Trail Road will be permanently reduced from 35 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour. The new speed limit will be in effect for the length of Indian Trail Road from Highway 74 to Old Monroe Road.
Reducing the speed limit will bring Indian Trail Road into compliance with an ordinance recently passed by the Indian Trail Town Council on May 14, stating all roads maintained by the Town of Indian Trail will be set at 25 miles per hour, except for Faith Church Road, which will remain at 35 miles per hour.
Additionally, according to the Town’s Engineering Department, the roadway's existing topography necessitates a reduction in speed for safety purposes. Also, the Indian Trail Road Complete Street project design includes 10-foot sidewalks that will adjoin the roadway. The reduced speed will create a safer environment for those walking or biking on the sidewalk and safer ingress and egress for businesses and residential properties along Indian Trail Road.
“We want to have the reduced speed in place before the Indian Trail Road Complete Street project begins,” said Todd Huntsinger, director of engineering. “We have coordinated the speed limit reduction with the Union County Sheriff’s Office, and they are supportive of the change.”
